LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Democratic gubernatorial candidate Mark Schauer is calling for more accountability and transparency from Michigan's for-profit, publicly funded charter schools after a newspaper investigation exposed shortcomings.
Schauer on Thursday said management companies should be subject to public-records request and the number of charter schools shouldn't be expanded until the oversight system is reviewed.
His other proposals include holding universities accountable for chartering bad schools, preventing unlimited advertising spending and requiring charter employees to participate in Michigan's school retiree system. The Detroit Free Press found little transparency and accountability within charter schools.
Republican Gov. Rick Snyder says he wants to discuss increased accountability and "better metrics" for all schools. He says the question isn't whether companies should make money from education, but whether the schools show "student growth" and are cost-effective alternatives.
