SPARKS, Nev. (AP) — A judge has ordered a mental evaluation for a 73-year-old Sparks man charged with murder in the shooting of two unarmed trespassers. Wayne Burgarello insists that he acted in self-defense under Nevada's "stand your ground" law. He killed a man and seriously injured a woman he found in a vacant house he owns.

ELKO, Nev. (AP) — An Elko man is pleading not guilty to charges that he was driving drunk when his vehicle ran over his girlfriend, killing her. The Elko Daily Free Press reports 39-year-old Jason Frazier says 46-year-old Kelli Cantrell jumped from the moving vehicle, but investigators say she was hit by the front of the vehicle. The incident occurred in a backcountry area north of Wells.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — The Nevada Supreme Court has suspended a Las Vegas criminal defense lawyer who pleaded guilty to faking documents showing that defendants had completed court-ordered counseling and community service. A three-justice panel temporarily suspended attorney Brian Bloomfield yesterday and referred his case to the State Bar of Nevada for possible disbarment.

CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) — Police are looking for a 36-year-old inmate from Washoe County who escaped from a conservation camp in Carson City. The Department of Corrections says James McDowell was reported missing late yesterday from the Stewart Conservation Camp adjacent to the Northern Nevada Correctional Center.
