DRAPER — Two inmates were transported to local hospitals after a fight broke out at the Utah State Prison Wednesday, officials said.
A fight involving 11 inmates started at about 10 a.m. in a common area in the Wasatch Facility, according to Utah Department of Corrections spokeswoman Brooke Adams. She said the fight was gang related and some inmates used makeshift weapons.
There were four inmates injured in the fight and two were taken to local hospitals for further treatment, Adams said. The inmates who were taken to the hospital by ambulance were in stable condition after sustaining stab and blunt force trauma injuries, she said.
The other two inmates were treated at the prison infirmary, according to Adams. All of the inmates who were involved in the fight were moved to secure housing.
Prison officials are investigating the incident, Adams said. If the condition of any of the inmates worsens, the Unified Police Department will take over the investigation.
The Utah State Prison was placed on lockdown after the fight. The Promontory, Lone Peak, Olympus and Timpanogos facilities resumed normal operations Wednesday afternoon but the lockdown at the Wasatch, Oquirrh and Uinta facilities remain on lockdown. Adams said the lockdown order for those facilities will be re-evaluated Thursday morning.
