PROVO — Brumby is the Australian term for a wild horse. Inspired by that image, and the sound of the word itself, the Provo-based band from Las Vegas is moving up in the local scene.

Winners of the Velour Summer Battle of the Bands, the quartet, made up of three cousins and their best friends, has made a name for the band by putting on a particularly engaging and immersive live show.

Their sound is western, inspired by the open spaces of Nevada and probably the horses of their namesake. With cowboy hats and tons of energy, Oliver, Tyler and Spencer Tingey, along with Dylan Self are primed to continue doing what they love.

Beatmaker Self gave KSL some insight into the inner workings of the band.

KSL: What's your "origin story"? How long have you been playing music, what inspired you to create a band, etc?

Dylan Self: Knowing the triviality of being in a "band," we spent our days in high school referring to ourselves as "musicians with benefits." But we knew we were meant for each other. It looks like things have gotten pretty serious.

KSL: Give me the thousand-foot view of your sound and style.

Self: Four boys straddling the line between quaint and rugged with their sincere, high-voltage western rock.

KSL: What inspires you? Who are your musical influences?

Self: I found them down the street when I was 5years old. Tyler had Power Ranger toys. The rest was history.

KSL: What inspires you? Who are your musical influences?

Self: Radiohead, Muse, U2, Sigur Ros, Johnny Cash, Coldplay, Arcade Fire, etc. I think what inspires us most is watching those influences deliver great performances. Also, Slab Pizza.

KSL: What do you tell yourself before a performance?

Self: I try to zen out and feel the time of the songs we're about to play while Oliver jumps around the green room like a darn chimpanzee.

KSL: What is your five-year-plan with your music?

Self: Write it, record it and perform it with fiery passion.

KSL: What has been the most exciting thing to happen in your career to date?

Self: There are so many little moments on the journey to get excited about. Everything from coming up with a killer new jam in the practice space to having a successful show in a city we've never played before. Playing at Velour's Battle of the Bands was incredibly fun and immersive of the Wasatch scene. Most of all, It was exhilarating to perform for such an energetic crowd. Taking the winning title was so heartening. But we know all of our best work is ahead of us, and we're humbly looking on towards that undertaking.

KSL: Who have you most enjoyed collaborating with, and who is your dream collaboration?

Self: There's this one girl we all had a secret crush on. One time she sang "Dreams" by The Cranberries with us onstage. It was dreamy. The perfect collaboration would be doing the sound track for a Robert Redford movie. Or having a duet between Oliver and Lana Del Ray. Or playing at some Southern grandma's barbecue. "Will jam 4 brisket."
