SALT LAKE CITY — Bees pitcher Caleb Clay has seen it all during his baseball career.

He was drafted by the Boston Red Sox in the first round of the 2006 draft, spent time in both the Red Sox and Nationals organizations and went 5-2 in Triple-A Syracuse last season. Clay started the season pitching in the Korean League before returning back to the United States.

Sunday, he made his first start for Salt Lake and threw a gem as the Bees broke out of a three-game losing streak with a 4-1 win over the Nashville Sounds at Smith’s Ballpark.

Clay said he depended on his off-speed pitches throughout the game.

“Overall, my fastball really wasn’t impressive today,” Clay said. “(My) changeup was real good, and I kind of used that to equalize the at-bats.”

Nashville opened the game’s scoring in the second inning, with left fielder Caleb Gindl hitting a solo home run to right field as the Sounds took a 1-0 lead. However, in the bottom of the third, Nashville starter Tyler Cravy surrendered a leadoff walk to J.B. Shuck. Shuck would later score on a fielder’s choice to tie the game.

Then, in the fifth inning, Shuck scored on a wild pitch, and Tommy Field scored later on a Brennan Boesch single that gave Salt Lake a 3-1 lead.

Zach Borenstein also hit a solo home run to right field for Salt Lake in the eighth inning.

Clay earned the win for Salt Lake, pitching five and two-thirds innings of one-run ball. Sounds reliever Arcenio Leon took the loss, giving up two earned runs in two and two-thirds innings.

With his RBI single in the fifth inning, Boesch now has 10 RBIs in his last 10 games with Salt Lake.

The Bees have two more games with Nashville before heading out on an eight-game road trip. Monday’s first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m., with Bees right-hander Joel Pineiro scheduled to face Sounds right-hander Taylor Jungmann.
