SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Utah lawmakers are considering borrowing $1 billion to speed up several major highway projects across the state.
Sen. Wayne Harper says he plans to push for bonding to complete current projects that likely would not be finished in the next decade without borrowing.
The Taylorsville Republican says the projects may include finishing the Mountain View Corridor in Salt Lake County, rebuilding Interstate 15 around Point of the Mountain, completing I-15 express lanes in Davis and Weber counties, and finishing the Southern Parkway and I-15 expansion near St. George.
Harper told The Salt Lake Tribune (http://bit.ly/1uGu0gN ) the projects are increasingly needed to reduce congestion.
Utah Department of Transportation Executive Director Carlos Braceras says the projects likely would not be funded by 2024 without bonding, even though they are important.
