ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — The New Mexico Leadership Institute is giving out $25,000 scholarships this month.

The organization will present 29 college-bound students with the awards at a banquet Saturday at the University of New Mexico campus.

The NMLI partnered with both UNM and New Mexico State University to choose the recipients from a pool of nearly 300 applicants.

The students had to spend the past year involved in community service programs and assignments that challenged them personally.

The institute's five-year program was designed to get high school juniors to become leaders in New Mexico after they graduate.
