OGDEN, Utah (AP) — Sheriff's deputies have released the name of a 46-year-old man who died on a family backpacking trip in the backcountry of Weber County.

Deputies say four members of an Ogden family left Monday on a backpacking trip in Wheatgrass Canyon and were unprepared for a sudden weather shift Tuesday that brought heavy snowfall and lower temperatures.

They say the father, 46-year-old Duane Savage, suffered from apparent diabetes complications and cold exposure about 4 miles from the nearest trailhead and was unable to leave his tent.

While his wife stayed with him, two other family members [hiked out of the canyon]( sid=30373276&nid=148&title=1-stranded-hiker-dies-another- rescued-near-ogden) Wednesday to find help.

Savage later died and crews removed his body from the canyon a few miles from Causey Reservoir on Thursday.

The cause of his death is under investigation.
