OGDEN, Utah (AP) — Sheriff's deputies have released the name of a 46-year-old man who died on a family backpacking trip in the backcountry of Weber County.

Deputies say four members of an Ogden family left Monday on a backpacking trip in Wheatgrass Canyon and were unprepared for a sudden weather shift Tuesday that brought heavy snowfall and lower temperatures.

They say the father, 46-year-old Duane Savage, suffered from apparent diabetes complications and cold exposure about 4 miles from the nearest trailhead and was unable to leave his tent.

While his wife stayed with him, two other family members hiked out of the canyon Wednesday to find help.

Savage later died and crews removed his body from the canyon a few miles from Causey Reservoir on Thursday.

The cause of his death is under investigation.
