CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — The Charlotte 49ers say men's basketball coach Alan Major is recovering from the first of two eye surgeries and will also undergo a heart procedure in mid-July.

Major will have a second eye surgery in August.

Major went on medical leave last month.

The school says in a press release Thursday that Major is "in good spirits and is progressing well following his first procedure" and he "looks forward to returning and he appreciates all the well wishes he has received from the 49ers family and Niner Nation."

It's unclear when Major will return to coaching.

Major said in a press release in May "my family has a history of heart and eye issues, and I plan to have procedures done over the next couple of months to address them."
