BAGHDAD (AP) — Iraqi soldiers and helicopter gunships are battling Sunni militants for a third day over control of Iraq's largest oil refinery. The two sides are holding different parts of the sprawling facility in Beiji (BAY'-zhee). President Barack Obama is to speak shortly about the crumbling situation in Iraq. According to a U.S. official, Obama is expected to announce that he is deploying about 100 Green Berets to Iraq to help train and advise Iraqi forces.
WASHINGTON (AP) — House Speaker John Boehner (BAY'-nur) says President Barack Obama must craft a strategy for combating terrorism in the entire Middle East, not just Iraq. The Ohio Republican says terrorism has grown dramatically on Obama's watch and it's time for him to present a plan for curbing its spread. He told reporters that with violence spreading in places like Iraq, Syria and Libya, it seems "the wheels are coming off" the administration's anti-terrorism efforts.
TORONTO (AP) — The Royal Canadian Mounted Police say they've rescued five children who were being exploited to produce online porn, and have charged or investigated 150 people in a nationwide crackdown on child porn. Police in Saskatoon say the operation resulted in the seizure of hundreds of computers and hard drives along with nearly 2 million images or videos.
SEATTLE (AP) — The Coast Guard is asking for help to identify who was behind several hoax calls that cost the service hundreds of thousands of dollars in wasted resources searching Washington state's Hood Canal. Officials say a man contacted the Coast Guard by radio on May 31 saying a fishing boat was sinking with five people on board. The next night he reported a boat sinking with two adults and a child. A man with the same-sounding voice radioed a third time on June 2 and falsely said a body had been found.
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Shelly Sterling's attorneys have asked a court to hold a hearing on allegations that Donald Sterling and his attorneys have threatened her legal team and the doctors who say the Los Angeles Clippers co-owner is mentally incapacitated. The filing claims that Donald Sterling called his estranged wife's attorney threatening lawsuits and making what was interpreted as a death threat. There's no word on whether the request for a hearing will be granted.
