BAGHDAD (AP) — The Iraqi government still controls the country's largest oil refinery. That word comes both from a top Iraqi security official and one of the militants fighting to capture the facility. But a witness says the Sunni militants have hung their black banners from watchtowers at the refinery, about 155 miles north of Baghdad. The witness also says militants are manning checkpoints around it. One of the militants says had it not been for the government's helicopter gunships, the insurgents would have captured the refinery.
BRUSSELS (AP) — NATO's secretary general says Russia has resumed a military buildup near Ukraine, calling it "a very regrettable step backward." Speaking in London, Anders Fogh Rasmussen (AHN'-derz fohg RAHS'-moo-sihn) said there are at least "a few thousand more Russian troops deployed to the Ukrainian border." He said it would be a "positive step" if the troops are there to stop the flow of weapons and fighters. But he adds, "That's not what we're seeing."
WASHINGTON (AP) — The number of Americans seeking unemployment benefits is at its lowest level in more than six years. The Labor Department says weekly applications fell by 6,000 last week, to a seasonally-adjusted 312,000. It's an indication that employers are letting go of fewer workers. On Wall Street, stocks have opened higher.
DETROIT (AP) — Three men have pleaded guilty to assault in a mob attack on a motorist in Detroit who accidentally struck a boy with his pickup truck. Prosecutors dropped attempted murder charges as part of the deals. All five people charged with the beating of Steve Utash now have pleaded guilty to assault.
NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) — A former paramedic who sexually assaulted an unconscious woman in an ambulance in Connecticut has been sentenced to three and a-half years in prison. Mark Powell of North Haven agreed to the prison time and lifetime sex offender registration when he pleaded guilty to second-degree sexual assault in April.
