WASHINGTON (AP) — Vice President Joe Biden has placed calls to Iraqi leaders including the Shiite prime minister, the Sunni parliamentary speaker and the president of Iraq's self-ruled northern Kurdish region. Biden, who is traveling in Latin America, praised all three leaders for their show of unity in the face of a blitz led by Sunni extremists. Meanwhile, White House officials say there is no timeline on when or if President Barack Obama will respond to the surge by militants.

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — Afghan officials say three Taliban suicide bombers targeted NATO fuel trucks at the border with Pakistan, setting off a gunbattle with police guards. It happened in the eastern province of Nangarhar in the parking lot of a NATO outpost. Most NATO cargo shipments go through the area toward Pakistan's port city of Karachi.

NEW YORK (AP) — A judge has denied a legal challenge by two police unions to a New York City law that eases the way for racial profiling claims. The 2013 law relaxes some legal standards for claims that stop and frisk tactics or other police techniques were used in a discriminatory way. The measure also reflected concerns about the department's extensive surveillance of Muslims.

WESSINGTON SPRINGS, S.D. (AP) — Frightening weather in a small town in central South Dakota. A tornado went right "through the heart" of Wessington Springs. A county prosecutor who serves as a spokesman for the city during emergency operations says everyone in town had been accounted for. Tornado alarms sounded and residents rushed to the town's emergency shelter that is located in the basement of the courthouse.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Los Angeles Dodgers' pitcher Clayton Kershaw has pitched his first no-hitter by , striking out a career-high 15 in an 8-0 win over the Colorado Rockies. Kershaw would have had a perfect game but there was a throwing error by shortstop Hanley Ramirez. The Dodgers have the only two no-hitters in the majors this season.
