EPHRAIM, Utah (AP) -- The state Board of Regents has approved a pay raise for the leaders of Utah's public universities and colleges.
The raises leave Utah's higher education leaders below what their national peers make, but are a step forward in being able to compete with other institutions in hiring and retention, said Rich Kendall, commissioner of the Utah System of Higher Education.
"We want to be somewhat current. We want to retain the presidents we have and recruit when we lose one," Kendall said.
The raises were approved Friday by the Board of Regents during a meeting at Snow College.
Weber State's Ann Millner received the system's highest increase at 9.8 percent, increasing it to $173,897.
"I've been there 24 years. I love my job and the university. Salary is not why I'm there," Millner said.
Snow president Mike Benson and College of Eastern Utah President Ryan Thomas received 8 percent increases and will earn $131,155. Five of Utah's school presidents only received a 3.5 percent increase approved by the Legislature, including University of Utah President Michael Young. Young's salary increases to $316,011, the highest among the state's higher education leaders.
Utah State University President Stan Albrecht has the second highest -- $257,238 -- after a 7 percent increase.
