NEW YORK (AP) — Terrence McNally's "Mothers and Sons" is the first victim of the Tony Awards: It will close on June 22 after missing out on being crowned the season's best play.

In "Mothers and Sons," actress Tyne Daly plays a mother who pays a surprise visit to her late son's ex-partner. Her son died of AIDS almost 20 years ago, leaving a lot of unresolved feelings — about him, her and the world in general.

A national tour of the play is being discussed.

The play, which had more than 100 performances, is being billed as the first time a legally married gay couple has been portrayed on Broadway. "All The Way," which stars Bryan Cranston as former President Lyndon B. Johnson, won the best play Tony on Sunday.
