SOUTH SALT LAKE — Police are looking for a "street thug" armed with a handgun who ripped a purse from an elderly woman's shoulder then brandished his weapon at witnesses who chased after him.
The brazen daytime robbery happened in the parking lot of Reams, 2783 S. State Street, about 10 a.m. Saturday
South Salt Lake police spokesman Gary Keller said the woman had finished her shopping and was waiting for a taxi when the bandit ripped the purse from her shoulder.
The man, wearing a white tank top, blue denim pants and a blue head rag, ran east on Claybourne Avenue and was chased by two male bystanders.
Keller said when the man realized he was being chased, he spun on his pursuers and pointed a gun at them. They gave up the chase, but an area resident saw the man get into the passenger seat of a green Subaru Outback.
The woman, although shaken up, was not physically harmed in the attack.
