ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) — The University of Michigan plans to celebrate the work of filmmaker John Sayles during a daylong symposium.
"Declarations of Independence: John Sayles as Author, Auteur, Founding Father" is planned for Wednesday at the Hatcher Graduate Library.
Sayles last year donated documents, images, props and other material to the Ann Arbor school for an archive covering his three-decade directorial career.
He and his producing partner, Maggie Renzi, are to attend the archive's ribbon-cutting ceremony on Wednesday. Actor David Strathairn also is to take part in the symposium.
Sayles' films include 1992's Academy Award-nominated "Passion Fish" and 1996's "Lone Star." His movies have been made outside the Hollywood system and explore themes such as race, class and gender identity.
