NEW YORK (AP) — Two people sustained minor injuries in an explosion that damaged a science laboratory at Stony Brook University on New York's Long Island.

A university spokeswoman says the incident happened around 5 p.m., Thursday during a "routine scientific experiment" at the Earth and Space Science Building.

Spokeswoman Lauren Sheprow says the injuries were being evaluated across campus at Stony Brook University Hospital.

She says structural damage from the explosion was contained to the lab and presented no danger to the campus at large.

It's finals week at the state university. The school has an undergraduate enrollment of more than 20,000.
