Sam Penrod ReportingJohn Gailey, Boy Scouts: “We just found out in the last few minutes, we obviously would like to know more, we're just grateful that he is okay."
A 20-year old scout leader who has been missing all day has been found tonight. Logan Manning turned up within the last hour after disappearing this morning. Manning was a camp counselor at Maple Dell Scout Camp in Payson Canyon.
The missing man apparently phoned home just after 9:00 tonight, saying he was fine. It is unclear he was even aware that a small army was out looking for him all afternoon and evening, but the good news is that he is safe and in good condition after a day of serious concern for his safety.
Twenty-year old Logan Manning was on the staff of Camp Maple Dell, and when everyone woke up this morning, he was no where to be found. The scouts searched the camp all morning long and then called the search and rescue.
Searchers began looking in the area this afternoon, because Manning's family says it is not unusual for him to get up at 4:00 in the morning and go for a hike before his day begins, although he told no one of his plans to go hiking or where he was going to be.
The fear was that even though he is very familiar with this area, that he may have become injured. But then just after 9:00 tonight, Manning apparently made contact with his mother and the search was called off.
John Gailey, Utah Nat'l Parks Council: “They have at least communicated with him, we don't know exactly how far that has gone, but they let us know he has been in contact with them and that he is off the mountain."
Sgt. Tom Hodgson, Utah County Sheriff's Office: “I'm sure we'll follow up with the family and find out, you know, what the situation was. Obviously from the sheriff's office and search and rescue perspective we're happy for Logan and his family that he is safe, that is the most important thing, that he's safe and we get our people back safely as well."
Some of the searchers are still four or five miles away from camp, so because it is dark, some of them may end up spending the night out on the trail and come back in the morning when it is safer and they can see where they are going.
