SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — One survivor says a ship that sank off the southern coast of South Korea started shaking and tilting, causing passengers to trip and bump into each other. He says he decided to jump into the cold sea. Officials say at least two people are dead. The ship was carrying 476 passengers, more than 300 of them high school students. Scores have been rescued. Dozens of vessels and helicopters are involved in the rescue effort.
PERTH, Australia (AP) — A 21,000 square-mile expanse of the Indian Ocean is the focus of 14 military and civilian aircraft on Wednesday that are looking for any clues that could lead to the missing Malaysian airliner. Officials this week said that aerial searches are winding down. Isolated showers could be a factor. A U.S. Navy robot submarine is scanning for signs of wreckage and flight data recorders.
NORFOLK, Va. (AP) — The Coast Guard says two ships have collided in a main shipping channel off the Virginia coast. The collision involves a 1,065-foot container ship and a 79-foot rig vessel. And a 751-foot cargo ship ran aground near Norfolk, Va., in high winds gusting up to 70 mph. There are no reports of injuries, damage or pollution.
BOSTON (AP) — Police in Boston say a man who dropped a backpack near the Boston Marathon finish line is being charged with possession of a hoax device and disturbing the peace. A police official says the arrest was made late Tuesday, hours after a solemn ceremony was held to mark the anniversary of last year's bombing. The backpack that was dropped contained a rice cooker.
WASHINGTON (AP) — Attorney General Eric Holder will be among those paying tribute on Thursday at an interfaith memorial service honoring the victims of Sunday's shootings at two Jewish facilities. The event will be held in the Jewish Community Center of Greater Kansas City. A white supremacist is accused of gunning down two people outside the building and another at a nearby Jewish retirement center.
