HORLIVKA, Ukraine (AP) — Pro-Russian insurgents continue to occupy government and law enforcement buildings in nearly 10 cities in eastern Ukraine. Many of them are armed, and they fortified their positions today, erecting fresh barricades. Ukraine's acting president, Oleksandr Turchynov, announced today a new operation to root out the insurgents but it's unclear what action Ukrainian forces will take. Ukrainian tanks have been seen near one city controlled by pro-Moscow gunmen.
PRETORIA, South Africa (AP) — The prosecution has finished its cross-examination of South African Olympic runner Oscar Pistorius, insisting the double-amputee intentionally shot his girlfriend to death as they argued. Throughout the grueling five-day cross-examination, prosecutor Gerrie Nel accused Pistorius of "tailoring" evidence and "concocting" a story that he fired shots at his bathroom door because he thought someone had broken into his home. Nel argued that Pistorius' girlfriend fled to the bathroom screaming before she was shot through the door.
BOSTON (AP) — Between 2:30 and 3 o'clock this afternoon, a flag-raising ceremony and a moment of silence will be held at the finish line of the Boston Marathon to mark the one-year anniversary of the explosions that killed three people and wounded dozens. Today is a day of tributes, also honoring the first responders, medical personnel who helped the victims and the MIT police officer killed when one of the alleged bombers tried to steal his gun three days after the bombing attack.
BAGHDAD (AP) — The Iraqi prison at the center of a 2004 detainee abuse scandal has been closed down because of security issues. Iraq's justice minister says 2,400 inmates have been transferred from Abu Ghraib to other prisons as a precautionary measure because the Abu Ghraib facility is in a "restive area." The prison is at the edge of the Sunni-dominated Anbar province, which has been engulfed in clashes between an al-Qaida-splinter group and government forces.
DAKAR, Senegal (AP) — An outbreak of the deadly Ebola virus in West Africa has been linked to the deaths of more than 120 people. The World Health Organization has recorded about 200 suspected or confirmed cases of Ebola, which is normally found in central or eastern Africa, in Guinea, Liberia and Mali. And the deaths of 121 people in Guinea and Liberia have been linked to the disease. There is no vaccine and no cure, and officials have said the current outbreak could last months.
