ORONO, Maine (AP) — The University of Maine has fired basketball coach Ted Woodward after a 6-23 season.

Woodward has been Maine's coach for 10 seasons and he leaves with a career record of 117-178. He also was an assistant for eight years at the Division I school.

The university said Monday he had two years left on his contract and would be paid $113,800 over 13 months as terms of the buyout.

University President Paul Ferguson lauded Woodward for his commitment to the university both "athletically and academically."

The school says it will immediately begin a national search for a new coach.
