RED BLUFF, Calif. (AP) — Federal investigators plan to examine the scene of a deadly bus-truck crash on California's Interstate 5 to look for signs of a fire before the vehicles exploded into towering flames north of Sacramento. They say they are also looking for possible witnesses to back up a driver's claim that the FedEx tractor-trailer was already on fire when it crossed the median and slammed into the bus full of high school students, killing 10 people.
BOURNE, Mass. (AP) — Authorities say it was not particularly windy and the ground underneath a bucket truck appeared solid at the time it tipped over, killing two workers who were in the bucket, 100 feet in the air on Cape Cod. The two Massachusetts men were working on high-tension power lines.
KIEV, Ukraine (AP) — Ukrainian special forces are in the eastern city of Slovyansk where armed pro-Russia men control a police headquarters and the Security Service office. Ukraine's interior minister says the men opened fire on the troops. Arsen Avakov has described the unrest as "Russian aggression." Secretary of State John Kerry conveyed "strong concern" to Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov that the attacks "were orchestrated and synchronized."
PERTH, Australia (AP) — There are indications that the locator beacon batteries on the all-important black boxes from a missing Malaysian airliner may have finally died. All has gone quiet in the Indian Ocean hunt following four strong underwater signals in the past week. Crews are continuing their search today for debris and any sounds that could still be emanating.
SANTIAGO, Chile (AP) — Residents have been evacuated and at least 500 homes have been destroyed by a massive forest fire blazing in the Chilean port city of Valparaiso. President Michelle Bachelet (bah-cheh-LET') has declared the city a catastrophe zone, which puts the armed forces in charge of maintaining order and evacuating thousands of people affected by the smoke and flames.
