MILAN (AP) — A Milan prosecutor has asked an appellate court to overturn a tax fraud conviction and jail sentence against designers Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana.
The ANSA news agency says prosecutor Gaetano Santamaria made the unexpected request during closing arguments Tuesday, calling the pair's Luxembourg company, at the center of the accusations, "a legal operation."
The designers, a mainstay of Milan design, were convicted of failing to declare 200 million euros ($268 million) through a Luxembourg company and handed a one-year and eight-month suspended jail sentence.
A judge will decide whether to accept the prosecutor's recommendation.
Dolce and Gabbana have denied tax evasion — and even shut down their Milan stores for three days last summer "in indigation" over a city official's remarks about their conviction.
