PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — A Portland medical clinic for the homeless has received a grant that will allow it to stay open beyond its scheduled April 1 closing.
But exactly how long it will remain open remains unclear.
The city-run Health Care for the Homeless clinic, which serves 2,300 patients, was expected to close at the end of the month after losing a $680,000 federal grant that paid for much of its operating costs.
About $360,000 in new federal funding is intended to ease the transition for patients, most of whom will not get medical care at the Portland Community Health Center.
Leslie Brancato, chief executive officer of the Portland Community Health Center, tells the Portland Press Herald (http://bit.ly/1gkwoCB ) the organization is hiring staff and working with officials and advocates to smooth the transition.
