MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — Maurice Strong scored 16 points and grabbed seven rebounds as Alabama State edged Jackson State 67-63 on Saturday night.
Jamel Waters added 17 points, five assists and four rebounds for the Hornets (18-11, 12-6 Southwestern Athletic Conference). Brandon Graham had 11.
The Hornets prevailed despite lukewarm shooting from the field (36.1 percent) and from 3-point range (36.4 percent) and being outrebounded 39-34 by the Tigers.
Alabama State went 14-7 to start but Jackson State answered with a 20-5 run midway to lead 27-19 with 4:32 left in the half and held on for a 33-31 advantage at the break. The lead changed hands seven times in the second half before the Hornets emerged on top, 56-55, with 5:31 to play and held on for the win.
Julysses Nobles led the Tigers (11-19, 7-11) with 20 points and four rebounds.
