SUMMIT COUNTY — A man buried by an avalanche in Summit County died Friday evening.

The Summit County Sheriff's Office received reports of a man being caught in an avalanche near Whitney Reservoir Friday night. Sheriff Dave Edmunds said the man was snowmobiling with family at the time of the avalanche.

Search and rescue crews responded to the scene and confirmed that the male had died.

The man is from northern Utah and had family with him at the time of the incident, according to Edmunds. Search and rescue members assisted in transporting the man from the scene near Gold Hill Road by Whitney Reservoir.

The man's name has not yet been released pending notification of other family members. More information will be posted as it becomes available.

The Utah Avalanche Center website indicated avalanche danger in the area was moderate to considerable.
