PHOENIX (AP) — The San Diego Padres have claimed outfielder Alex Castellanos off waivers from the Texas Rangers.
The Padres made the move Friday, a day after he was designated for assignment by Texas.
The 27-year-old Castellanos played 24 games with the Los Angeles Dodgers over the past two seasons, hitting a combined .171 with two home runs. He batted .257 with 19 home runs, 61 RBI and 19 stolen bases with Triple-A Albuquerque last year.
Castellanos went 3 for 9 this spring with Texas.
To make room on the 40-man roster, the Padres put left-hander Cory Luebke on the 60-day disabled list. The pitcher had Tommy John surgery last month.
