Rain and strong winds will persist for the Pacific Northwest on Thursday, while rain showers will continue spreading across the Southeast. A trough of low pressure over the Central Plains will continue trekking eastward over the Lower Mississippi River Valley and into the Southeast. As this system pulls moisture in from the Gulf of Mexico, it is expected to produce scattered showers across the region from Louisiana through Florida and the Carolinas. Heaviest rainfall is likely in northern Florida with rainfall totals ranging from 1 to 2 inches.
Meanwhile in the West, a low pressure system over the Pacific Ocean will move over the Pacific Northwest and push a cold front eastward into the Intermountain West and northern Rockies. This system will pull abundant moisture in from the Pacific Ocean, allowing for moderate to heavy rainfall to develop along the coast from western Washington through northern California. Snowfall totals for the Cascades will vary around 5 inches above 5,000 feet. The northern Sierras will see snowfall levels dropping to near 6,000 feet, but snow will be light and scattered remaining less than 3-4 inches. High wind advisories will remain in effect across the Northwestern corner of the nation with gusts from 40 to 50 mph at highest mountain passes.
Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Wednesday have ranged from a morning low of -27 degrees at Ely, Minn. to a high of 86 degrees at Immokalee, Fla.
