TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — Florida legislators will consider changes to laws passed in 2009 and 2010 after a drop in test scores among nursing school graduates.
The original laws permitted trade schools and colleges to open nursing programs without approval of the state's Board of Nursing. They were aimed at increasing the number of nursing schools in Florida. But now, the numbers of nursing schools on probation has increased, as have fail rates on nursing exams.
Sen. Denise Grimsley sponsored that original legislation. She says the new bill she's sponsoring will fix the original to take care of a problem with "bad players" in the nursing school arena.
The new legislation would require nursing programs to be accredited by a recognized sanctioning board within five years of accepting students.
