This is Fred Ball for Zions Bank, speaking on business.
What does it take to build a successful business? Tenacity, persistence, courage, sacrifice, conviction, dedication and strong belief. Yes, these are critical traits for success, especially when you face strong competitors who don't want you to succeed.
ClearPlay is a Salt Lake City company that faced serious challenges in their formative stage. The company founders, Lee and Matt Jarman, believed that there was a market for a tool that would allow viewers to watch great movies in their homes without profanity, violence and nudity. The founders came up with an ingenious DVD player that filters objectionable content from regular DVDs.
The Jarmans developed an immediate demand for their DVD player but had to endure three years of costly litigation brought on by Hollywood executives. ClearPlay eventually prevailed in this lawsuit after Congress passed The Family Movie Act of 2005. This new law, signed by President Bush, declared that ClearPlay's movie filtering technology was not a violation of Hollywood copyrights and could legally be used by parents who wish to filter unwanted content from movies in their home.
I mentioned tenacity and sacrifice. Matt and Lee Jarman pursued their vision for ClearPlay with both. The brothers went without salaries for years and amassed sizable personal debt in the process. They knew their product and service were needed to help parents who wanted to control the movie content their family was exposed to.
ClearPlay is the story of two average brothers that stood up against Hollywood and won, to provide a valuable parental control technology for families. In addition, they have recently succeeding in getting their ClearPlay DVD player sold nationally in both Target and Best Buy stores, ousting billion dollar worldwide brands in the process.
Although it has been a long and difficult process, ClearPlay has succeeded in developing a new parental filtering technology now used by thousands of families.
For Zions Bank, I'm Fred Ball. I'm speaking on business.
