WEST VALLEY CITY — Four people are in custody Tuesday morning after a high-speed chase through West Valley City and West Jordan.

Around 1:45 a.m., a West Valley traffic officer tried to stop a car for driving with no registration near 3360 S. 2700 West. The car fled from police, who pursued the vehicle onto I-215, according to West Valley City Police Sgt. Shane Matheson. Upon entering the freeway, one of the people in the car threw some narcotics out of the car, and assisting officers recovered the drugs, Matheson said.

Police were unable to confirm how fast the car was driving but said it reached "high rates of speed" according to West Valley Deputy Police Chief Mike Powell.

The car left the freeway at State Street and continued northbound onto Winchester Street.

Eventually, all four tires of the car were flattened on their own and the driver pulled into an LDS meetinghouse parking lot at 1380 W. 6875 South. There were two juveniles and two adults in the car, all of whom fled when the car stopped, Matheson said. Police apprehended three of the car's occupants in the parking lot. Police then used a K-9 search unit to locate the fourth person in a shed about a block west of the church, Matheson said.

No one was injured in the chase.

Police identified the driver as 24-year-old Stevan Hernandez. He was booked into the Salt Lake County jail for investigation of fleeing police and failure to stop at the command of an officer, according to Powell. He was also booked on outstanding warrants for public intoxication, disorderly conduct, possession of drug paraphernalia and intent to distribute drugs. The other three people are still being questioned by police.

Murray police, three West Valley K-9 units, and Unified Police Department and its canine team all assisted.

More information will be provided as it becomes available.
