IRON COUNTY — A residence was destroyed by a fire believed to by started by a chimney problem.

On Friday at about 12:30 p.m., fire crews were called to reports of a residence with the roof on fire near 3500 E Red Creek Canyon Road.

Due to the location of the home, it took fire crews "several minutes to get to the residence," said Detective Sgt. Del Schlosser, Iron County Sheriff's Office.

When crews arrived, they found the roof of the residence was on fire and firefighters were met with heavy fire and smoke, Schlosser said. The roof soon began to collapse and crews were forced to retreat from the residence.

Because of the location of the home, there were no fire hydrants in the area and the water resources were limited.

"It was taking up to 1 hour for water to be trucked to the location," Schlosser said.

However, crews were able to contain the fire to the single residence and one outbuilding. The fire destroyed the residence with an estimated $400,000 in damage.

Fire personnel from Paragonah, Parowan, Brian Head and the Bureau of Land Management responded to the area, and approximately 8 fire apparatuses were used on scene, Schlosser said.
