SALT LAKE CITY — The New Year is just days away, but people have already begun celebrating. The annual three-day EVE celebrations by the Downtown Salt Lake City Alliance started Sunday night.

For the first time, a sculpture spelling out "believe" has been displayed. Each letter lights up and changes color. The idea is to give people inspiration for the New Year.

With art, light and sound EVE goers will bring in the New Year. In a family-friendly atmosphere, both kids and adults have the opportunity to be entertained.

Two-thousand beach balls were blown up and ready to be thrown or kicked. Across the hall beach balls were exchanged for hula hoops.

And New Year's resolutions were written in glow-in-the-dark highlighter.

Twenty inflatable bounce houses fill one of the rooms where slides, jousting and jumping are among the available activities.

Up to 40,000 people are expected to attend the celebrations. About five to 10 percent of that number will be people from out of town, according to Nick Como with the Downtown Salt Lake City Alliance.

"People are booking their ski vacations, we found, during New Year's, so they can go skiing up at the great ski areas we have and then come down and have this very unique experience in our urban center," Como said.

A pass also grants access into the Clark Planetarium, Discovery Gateway, The Leonardo and the Utah Museum of Contemporary Art.

If you need one more reason to check out EVE, there will be one of the original power rangers judging a costume contest starting at 6 p.m. Monday.

Tickets are $15 for adults and $5 for children ages 3-9. It also gets you into the Jazz game tomorrow night, but you have to pick up your ticket at 9 a.m. Monday. EVE lasts through the Dec. 31.
