NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) - A police official says an unknown assailant has hurled a hand grenade at a van carrying British tourists in Kenya's coastal region.

Regional police coordinator Aggrey Adoli said Thursday the hand grenade failed to explode after hitting a window of the vehicle in a neighborhood of the area's main city Mombasa. Police withheld the tourists' identity.

Britain's Foreign Office said it was urgently looking into the reports.

Al-Shabab militants from Somalia have been blamed for previous attacks on tourists in the region, including two kidnappings of European tourists in 2011.

Kenya deployed its military to fight militants in Somalia in October 2011. Al-Shabab then vowed to retaliate, and the country has since suffered a wave of gun and grenade attack in some of its cities.
