LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) - Wright State got out of their game plan and the bigger, better Louisville squad took advantage.
Shoni Schimmel scored 17 points, including five 3-pointers, and the No. 7 Cardinals cruised to a 99-40 win over Wright State on Saturday night in their first game since Antonita Slaughter was diagnosed with a season-ending blood clot in her lung.
"We stopped reversing the ball," Raiders coach Mike Bradbury said. "You can't just play on one side of the floor against them. They're a little bigger than us. We played North Carolina State, James Madison, we've played some good people. You can neutralize that size if you reverse the ball."
The Raiders (7-3) average 83 points a game, but were stymied by the Cardinals' staunch defense. Wright State shot 23 percent overall _ 18 percent in the first half _ and made six of 26 three-pointers.
Kim Demmings, the Horizon League Preseason Player of the Year, had four points on 2-of-15 shooting, well below her average of 24, which ranks 10th in the nation.
Tay'ler Mingo led the Raiders with 15 points. Tayler Stanton had a team-high nine rebounds.
Sara Hammond and Asia Taylor added 12 points apiece for the Cardinals (9-1), who shot 56 percent from the field.
The Cardinals took control with a 14-4 run in the first half and continued to extend their advantage.
Schimmel, who shoots 33 percent from the 3-point line, sank the Cardinals' first four from beyond the arc to boost Louisville's early lead.
Wright State missed its first six 3-point attempts. Ivory James broke the streak with one from long-range that made it 42-10 with 6:17 left in the first half.
James finished with eight points and five rebounds.
It was a tough night for Demmings. With :26 left in the first half, Demmings stole the ball and had an open fast break to the basket, but missed the layup.
Another attempt by Demmings rolled over the rim and out just before the halftime buzzer.
"I think we focused on their three main players, that we limited their touches and didn't allow them to get into the paint as much," Hammond said.
Louisville had a stellar shooting night at the free throw line, making 10 of 13 shots.
Wright State notched 22 turnovers, well above its average of 11.
"I thought we got some good shots early and missed them," Bradbury said. "After that, we struggled, and it was mainly because of them."
