STANSBURY PARK, Tooele County — Gunfire that prompted a lockdown for three Stansbury Park schools on Tuesday was later confirmed to be a suicide.

Tooele County Sheriff Frank Park confirmed that deputy Steve Hansen, 37, took his own life Tuesday morning in his home near Stansbury Park Elementary. Tooele police are investigating the incident.

The Tooele County Sheriff's Office reported hearing shots fired in the Stansbury Park neighborhood, Pitt said. Troopers were on scene and surrounded a house at 745 Country Club Drive with rifles drawn.

The elementary school was put on lockdown and kindergarten students en route to the area were diverted to another school shortly before 12:30 p.m. while officers responded to the home at 745 Country Club Drive.

A SWAT team went into the home — guns drawn and shields up — and quickly exited again with their weapons lowered.

Rose Springs Elementary and Stansbury High School were also placed under lockdown. All the lockdowns were lifted, however, in less than an hour and parents were instructed they did not need to come pick up their students.

Hansen worked at the Tooele County Sheriff's Office for four years, Park said. He called the married father of six a valuable member of the county's public safety community.

"Deputy Hansen will be deeply missed and our heartfelt sympathy goes out to his family," Park said.
