SEATTLE (AP) - Asiana Airlines started cargo service this week at Sea-Tac Airport with a Boeing 747-400 freighter.
The Port of Seattle says the Asiana service is part of its long-term push to triple cargo volume at the airport. The port is spending more than $20 million to improve parking and apron space for air freighters and expanding the underground fueling system.
Sea-Tac's air cargo trade with Asia increased more than 12 percent in 2012 thanks to exports of fruit, seafood and high-tech machinery. Air cargo trade increased only 2 percent overall as European cargo decreased.
The port says Asiana is the sixth carrier with regularly scheduled service at Sea-Tac. FedEx is the largest, accounting for 43 percent of the volume.
