SALT LAKE CITY — The driver of a semitrailer thought to have been injured when his vehicle hit a barrier on I-80 may actually be the victim of a hit-and-run immediately following the wreck.
The semitrailer, which was carrying crude oil, smashed into a barricade on the I-80 eastbound off ramp to I-15 southbound and 600 South around 6:30 a.m., according to UHP.
Investigators believe the driver of the semitrailer exited his vehicle after the crash and walked behind the crash scene, possibly to warn other motorists. They think he then was hit by another vehicle.
The semitrailer's driver was found in critical condition on the left side shoulder of the road. His injuries are consistent with having been involved in an auto-pedestrian crash.
No vehicles stopped at the scene and UHP doesn't know what type of vehicle may have hit the man. Investigators ask anyone who witnessed or has information relating the crash to please contact UHP dispatch at 801-887-3800.
The initial wreck closed the ramp. Eastbound traffic was advised to use I-215 and state Route 201 as alternates.
Updates will be posted as they become available.
