Shelley Osterloh ReportingSalt Lake figure skating is hosting its annual ice show called "Concert on the Rocks."
They whirl and twirl and jump, from the youngest beginners to those who are nationally ranked and coaches. The Salt Lake Figure Skating Club draws from some of the best skaters along the Wasatch Front for its annual show.
Utah's top senior division singles skater, Stephanie Rosenthal, will perform one of the numbers that helped her place eighth at nationals.
Stephanie Rosenthal, Figure Skater: "I exceeded my own expectation. I was hoping to come in top ten if I was lucky. And with the new system, they started appreciating my talents more, which are in the artistry and less in the technical, and that really helped me."
Coaches say many Utah skaters are doing well in national competitions and many of them will show the home crowd what they can do.
Stewart Steurgon, Figure Skating Coach: "We had two this year, three this year, that qualified for Jr. Nationals out of this rink. So a lot of young kids that are hitting the national circuit. It's getting very exciting."
The show features about 50 local amateur skaters and a handful of guest stars, including some Olympians and national skaters. People like Josef Sabovcik and 1984 Olympic bronze medalist and Ryan Bradley, who is a World Jr. medalist.
Ryan Bradley, Ranked 8th Nationally: "Depending on who retires this year, I'm ranked pretty high in the country. I'm hoping maybe I can make a birth in the world team this year."
But for a few days, all these skaters will put thoughts of competitions aside and skate for the fun of performing for others. The Salt Lake Figure Skating Ice show runs tonight and tomorrow night at the Salt Lake City Sports Complex on Guardsman Way by the U. The shows start at 7:00.
