Marc Giauque reporting A close call at South Jordan's Daybreak development is the seventh involving animals or people and thin ice at Oquirrh Lake. Officials are happy a situation on Monday didn't get worse.

Around Oquirrh Lake there are numerous signs warning people to stay off the ice. The developer says his company has initiated a campaign in schools urging children to keep their animals away.

The problem is that circulating water makes the ice deceivingly thin. "We have been informed of seven times this year where either an animal or a person has gone through the ice," explained Nate Moreale, of the South Jordan Fire Department.

Moreale says on Monday, a security guard who witnessed a dog breaking through the ice kept people from trying to go rescue the animal. An ice rescue team pulled it out, unharmed.
