WEBER COUNTY — Two cows created a traffic hazard and delays on I-15 near the Weber County and Box Elder County line Tuesday afternoon.
Utah Highway Patrol troopers had to shut down lanes of traffic while the cows threatened to make their way into the northbound lanes.
The officers said they tried to cut a hole in a fence and corral the cows to a safe area, but when the cattle weren't cooperative a trooper shot and killed them.
"It is never a good call when we get this call, because once you have seen the devastation that can be caused by striking one of these animals you realize how fragile the chances of the motoring public are when they hit one of them," said Sgt. Brad Horne of the Utah Highway Patrol.
There was a secondary crash as a result of the incident near the freeway.
It is still unclear exactly how the cows got loose.
