KANAB — A 70-year-old California man died Saturday after he crashed his motorcycle while traveling on U.S. 89 in Kane County.

The man was riding a Harley Davidson in the Kanab area around 4 p.m. when he failed to negotiate a curve in the road and left the roadway, overturning the motorcycle, Utah Highway Patrol trooper Jalaine Hawkes said. She said the incident remains under investigation, but it appears the rider approached the curve traveling too quickly and lost control.

No one witnessed the crash, which was reported by a passing motorist. The driver was found dead at the scene and Hawkes said he appeared to have suffered massive head trauma.

A helmet was found at the scene, but Hawkes said it's not believed the man was wearing it because the chin strap was tightened to the point that it couldn't have been used.

Speed likely played a factor in the crash, Hawkes said. An autopsy will determine whether something else, such as a medical condition, precipitated the incident. The man's name was not released pending notification of next of kin.
