(KSL News) Highway Patrol troopers surrounded a UTA bus after a man walked out in the middle of traffic, then climbed on top of the bus.
It happened this morning at 2100 South and Bangerter Highway.
The man apparently walked into traffic and when he came to the bus, he began banging on the doors. He then pounded on the windshield, before climbing on top of the bus.
Trooper Michael Wells / Utah Highway Patrol: "This is a new one, definitely new for the books."
The incident happened during the peak of morning rush hour. Traffic came to a standstill on S-R 201. A lot of people saw a man running across the highway.
Tim Start / Witness: "I noticed a guy in the traffic lanes jumping up and down running back and forth, waving his arms around, almost like he wanted to surrender. Traffic was ridiculously heavy, almost at a standstill."
Sgt. Michael Wells / Utah Highway Patrol: "It definitely set people back 20 to 30 minutes."
Troopers say when traffic stopped for 31-year-old Anthony Jones Edmund, he climbed onto two cars in the middle of the highway.
Sgt. Michael Wells / Utah Highway Patrol: "The reports we got was a male trying to climb on cars to get a ride, the last vehicle he tried to commandeer was a UTA bus. What he did was actually stop the bus. Ordered it to stop. Hopped on top of a bicycle that was mounted on the front of the bus. Scaled a window, and hopped on top of a bus. When we got on scene he was still on top of the bus, and he apparently looked like he wanted to jump off. He did jump off as we drove by westbound. As we turned and headed eastbound, he was back in the median."
Then, without incident, Edmund just gave up. After a medical screening, troopers say he was drunk.
Sgt. Michael Wells / Utah Highway Patrol: "We could smell the alcohol on him. He also indicated he was given a pill by some female friends of his last night, and he didn't know what it was. He was cleared medically, and he is on his way to the jail right now."
Edmund is charged with bus jacking, a felony, and being intoxicated in public, a misdemeanor.
The highway patrol will be releasing dash cam video of the incident. We'll show you on Eyewitness News at four.
