PROVO — Two homeowners found what they thought may have been pipe bombs early Sunday afternoon. Provo police are still investigating one of those packages as a possible explosive device.

Lt. Matt Siufanua said a man mowing his lawn near 500 W and 300 North found what he believed could be a pipe bomb at about 1 p.m. He picked up the device and moved it into the street before calling police.

Siufanua described the package as cylindrical with wires coming out of it, "which made this (homeowner) very nervous."

Police brought in the bomb squad which used a robot to retrieve the device. Bys Sunday evening, investigators determined the object was the battery casing of bicycle light.

Earlier, police were sent out to another suspicious package call. A man found what appeared to be a pipe bomb in the street near 500 West and 500 South. He picked up the device and saw what appeared to be a fuse, which he then pulled out.

Siufanua said the man then called police. The device appeared to be a homemade M-80 or firecracker.

"If you see a device or it looks like a bomb or even suspicious in nature, don't touch it," Siufanua said.

He encouraged people to call police as soon as possible, even if they simply see someone they consider suspicious or who they know does not belong in the neighborhood.
