SALT LAKE CITY — Most of the high schools and elementary schools across the state let out for summer break this week. For families wanting to begin their summer vacations early, or for parents who just want to get their kids out of the house for a few hours, here are a few events going on this weekend to fill that need.
Denver & Rio Grande Western Rail Trail
In case you have been thinking about getting into better shape this summer (or even if you haven't), National Trails Day gives you the perfect opportunity to get outside and get active.
The Denver & Rio Grande paved trail runs through the cities of Clearfield, Clinton, Layton, Kaysville and Farmington. On Saturday from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., residents are invited to walk, jog, bike or rollerblade sections of the trail or all 14 miles. Each city will have activities planned along the trail. Bring the whole family and pets on a leash.

Motocross racingRocky Mountain Raceways is opening up its season of motocross racing on Friday. The track was recently given a complete redesign, and the racers are excited to try it out.
The races begin Friday at 4 p.m. and go until 11:30 p.m. Take your whole family for a night of adrenaline and awesome entertainment of motocross racing at 6555 W. 2100 South in Salt Lake City. The races will continue throughout the summer and will be scheduled for each Friday until Sept. 14.
Ogden Music Festival
The annual Ogden Music Festival brings a variety of artists and musicians to Utah. The 2013 festival has a great lineup of dozens of bluegrass and folk bands, including "Sam Bush," "The Boxcars," "Elephant Revival" and "Run Boy Run." The festival also includes great food vendors and shops. Families are invited to camp at Fort Buenaventura Park during the festival.
Music festivals are pretty great because you get to meet interesting people and get introduced to new genres of music. The three-day event begins Friday and starts each day at 5 p.m. and ends at 10:15 p.m.
Canyonlands PRCA Rodeo
The annual Canyonlands PRCA Rodeo includes a carnival, vendors, a parade on Saturday, live music and, of course, a lot of rodeo entertainment. The rodeos will showcase steer wrestling, team roping, barrel racing, bull riding and bareback riding. The kids can also enjoy some mutton bustin' (basically, they get to ride sheep) and a greased pig chase. And trust me, it is quality entertainment.
The Canyonlands PRCA Rodeo takes place in Moab, and the rodeos begin each day at 6 p.m The event started Thursday and runs until Saturday, June 1.
Outdoor movie night in Kearns
If you haven't seen "Wreck-It Ralph" by now, you need to. It is really entertaining and, in my opinion, one of the most original movies Disney has produced in years. The Utah Olympic Oval and the Kearns Oquirrh Park Fitness Center have teamed up to show a few outdoor movies during the summer, and "Wreck-It Ralph" will be showing Friday from 8:30 to 10:30 p.m.
You can bring your entire family to 5624 S. Cougar Lane in Kearns to enjoy the movie and concessions. Make sure to bring a chair, blanket or pillows.
