WELLSVILLE, Cache County — A Wellsville man is dead and a toddler uninjured after the toddler was able to climb into the front seat of a car and shift it into gear, causing it to roll down the hill it was parked on.

Steven Speth, 54, was working on a semitrailer in his front yard Sunday at about 5 p.m. while his wife and daughter were hooking a small utility trailer to a Dodge Durango. His grandson, who is under 3, was sitting in the back seat of the vehicle.

The toddler climbed into the driver seat of the vehicle and pull the shift lever out of park, causing the Durango to roll down the hill it had been parked on, according to the Cache County Sheriff's Office.

The Durango and trailer traveled about half a block before crashing into a parked truck, according to police.

Speth saw his wife and daughter trying to get into the Durango to stop it and ran over to help. Police do not know if Speth slipped and fell, but he was run over by the utility trailer.

The Durango and trailer traveled about half a block before crashing into a parked truck, according to police.

The toddler was uninjured in the accident. Speth was taken to Logan Regional Hospital in extremely critical condition. He died at about 8 p.m. Sunday.

An investigation into the accident is ongoing, according to police.
