(KSL News) -- A Salt Lake family who has lived in their home for over 30 years had to sleep somewhere else last night.
Their house went up in flames, as we showed you live on Eyewitness News at four. Today, not much is left.
Fire investigators say the fire started in the garage, but it built so much pressure it blew the garage door out. Then the flames went up the sides of the house into the attic.
All the while, the home owners were inside and didn't know anything was wrong.
David Horne , Homeowner: "There was a bang, and it felt like an earthquake, the house shook. The smoke was coming down from the attic, so you know the house by that time was trashed. It was unstoppable by the time we realized there was anything wrong."
The couple got out safely with their dog, and watched as flames consumed the home. The entire neighborhood was drawn outside because of the size of the flames and smoke.
The home was built in the late 40's, and has been in the Horne family for three generations.
In the house -- thousands of books, including some rare LDS books were burned in the blaze. Also, one of the Hornes was an active local artist, so several original paintings also gone.
Damaged is estimated to be at least 500,000 dollars.
Despite all this damage, there is one group that benefited from this tragedy.
They were here today, we'll have that story on Eyewitness News at 6.
