UAE woman appointed to UN administrative board

DUBAI, Apr. 29 WAM, 2006 (QNA via COMTEX) -- A United Arab Emirates (UAE) national woman has gained membership to the Administrative Review Board of the UN International Convention. Habiba Al Mar'ashi, Chairperson of the Emirates Environment Group, was among 20 individuals from the business, workers and civil society leadership appointed from various parts of the world by the UN Secretary General Kofi Annan to the board.

By this appointment, Al Mar'ashi thus becomes the first Emirati woman to gain membership to the UN board.

Al Mar'ashi is a founding member of the Emirates Environment Group, which was set up in 1991. She currently heads the Group which has more than 1,500 members.

The Emirates Environment Group aims at creating and spreading awareness on local and international environmental issues, promoting positive environmental actions and encouraging individual and collective responsibilities to protect and preserve the environment.
