OREM — Four Utah cities have been ranked among the 100 safest in the U.S., according to publishing company CQ Press. In contrast, three Utah cities ranked low on the list of more than 400 cities.

Orem was the state's safest city at No. 19. Provo was ranked 64th, Sandy 74th and West Jordan at No. 89.

The annual report compiles data using the FBI crime statistics with a population of 75,000 or more. Statistical data from the most common occurrences of crimes are used to rank cities across the nation.

Cities of 500,000+ population

RankLowest Crime RateHighest Crime Rate
1.El Paso, TXDetroit, MI
2.San Diego, CABaltimore, MD
3.New York, NYMemphis, TN
4.Austin, TXPhiladelphia, PA
5.San Jose, CAWashington DC

Other Utah cities noted on the list were Ogden at No. 228, West Valley City at No. 270 and Salt Lake City at No. 343. Both Boston and Los Angeles ranked safer than Salt Lake, according to the data.

For the largest cities in the country, El Paso, Texas, had the lowest crime rate, and Detroit, Mich. had the highest rate. The list of 33 largest cities does not include Chicago, because Chicago does not tabulate rape statistics in conformity with the UCR program that was used in the calculations.
